Wal-mart & Oracle

Wal-Mart has been a world leader in retail sales since 1962 when the first Wal-Mart store was opened in Rogers, ark. The company was formally incorporated in 1969 as Wal-Mart inc. Its shares began to float in the OTC by 1970 and two years later the shares began to be bought and sold at NYSE. In less than a decade, the company started to flourish across America and by the end of the decade it had 276 stores in 11 states.

By the year 1983 the company opened up its first Sam’s open warehouse and in the year 1988 the company opened up its first ever super center, which later on became the dominant format of the Wal-Mart stores across the globe. Wal-Mart had everything from grocery to general merchandise, it was like ‘you name it, they have it’. In the year 1991, after creating history in America more than once Wal-Mart opened up its first international outlet in new Mexico and after that there was absolutely no stopping for Wal-Mart The positioning was done superbly with the aim in mind of providing value to those who really need it.

The idea was to provide everything at low rates so that those who buy the stuff at Wal-Mart save and use it to fulfill their other needs as well. This idea was widely marketed and hence this became the identity of Wal-Mart people who needed to buy quality products at cheap prices headed for Wal-Mart as they knew they’ll be getting value for their money and also get the most out of everything at the lowest possible amounts. As they put it “if we work together we will lower the cost of living for everyone, we will make everyone see how it is to save and have a better life”

Oracle: Three decades from now the business world seemed a lot different, that is when Larry Ellison with Bob Miner and Ed Oates worked on a database idea to help in maintaining a list of customers and reaching them in a different manner. The idea had never been in the market and it needed a lot of hard work. The trio knew that if the idea was a success there would be a lot of businesses who would give almost anything to have their idea. 30 years down the line Oracle has emerged as the largest database company and related applications house globally.

The company is the world’s leading supplier of software and ranks at number two in being the largest independent software company. Their products (read technology is easily found in any industry, people from all walks of life use and take advantage from their different software as and what suits their business needs. Oracle started as a small company but soon became one of the leading software houses in the world in a very short span of time.

This was possible by the use of highly skilled people working together, having the best skilled people, putting in that extra effort to bring out the most innovative of ideas to life and gathering and simultaneously using the ever so important knowledge of their customers without whom no company can ever survive. At oracle, they believe and have written it on their website as well that innovation is what drives Oracle, without it they would be just another database software company.

This innovation does not only end with the software themselves, when the world was looking elsewhere to promote their products it was oracle who thought of putting its software over the internet so millions of people could just log on the internet and try-out its product. The innovation became the life blood at Oracle. As they put it, their goal is to provide innovation at all levels to their customer while understanding and fulfilling the needs of their customers and solving the problems of their customers as best as they can.
